Our hygienist will clean your teeth thoroughly and use a scaler to remove plaque which may have built up around the gum line. In additional to our hygienists specialisation in oral hygiene techniques; some of our professionals are also trained to carry out additional treatment including teeth whitening and providing fissure sealants.
What are fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants which are also known as dental sealants are a type of treatment which aims to prevent tooth decay. Made out of plastic, these coatings are placed usually on the molars and premolars. This is because these teeth have grooves which make them more vulnerable to decay. Sealants are often recommended once the chewing surface of the tooth has ‘erupted’ beyond the gum. So by applying this sealant, it provides extra protection for the fissured areas by providing a smooth surface.
For this procedure, your teeth will be cleaned by the hygienist to remove any plaque build up and stains and dried. An acidic solution is then placed on the tooth’s chewing surface before being rinsed off providing a fine rough surface and small microscopic areas which surrounds the tooth enamel. This is what allows the dental sealant to attach to the tooth. The liquid sealant is applied once the tooth has been dried again and the sealant is hardened using a light. In some cases a two component sealant is used which does not require to be hardened by a light. Once the sealant has hardened, you are able to chew again as normal.
